The job market feels rocky right now. I know that. But here's what I also know: companies are still hiring and they're paying well for the right people.

This week alone, I found 9 roles ranging from $185K to $350K. These aren't just open positions. These are companies betting on 2025 and building their teams now. That's strategic. And if you're looking for your next role, you need to be just as strategic in how you apply.

Here's something most people don't think about: the same strategic thinking you use to innovate and solve problems at work applies to your job search too. You wouldn't approach a complex project at work without a plan. Don't approach your applications that way either.

The strategic application approach

Here's something you need to know: no job description has a 100% skills match unless it was written specifically for you. If you meet 50% of the criteria, apply. And when you do, write a cover letter.

I know, I know. Most people skip the cover letter. That's exactly why you shouldn't.

Your cover letter serves two purposes:

1. It helps you get the interview

Use two paragraphs. First paragraph: why you're the right fit for the role. Second paragraph: why you want to work for this company specifically.

2. It sets you up for a successful negotiation later

When you clearly articulate your value upfront, you're building the foundation for what you'll negotiate later in the process.

One of my clients used this exact approach and negotiated a $320K compensation package.

I'm not a recruiter, so apply directly with the company. If a role is no longer listed or the link doesn't work, go to the company's careers page and search there.

And if you're looking at these roles thinking "I don't have everything they're asking for," remember: neither does anyone else. The companies that are hiring right now aren't looking for perfection. They're looking for people who can think strategically, communicate clearly, and solve problems. If that's you, apply.

P.S. If you find this helpful, share it with someone you know who's looking for their next role.
